Whyte and Mackay 50 Year Old

Has anyone else been successful in the Whyte and Mackay competition for the 50 year old blend? I always thought my chances would be good as they are giving away 500 bottles a month between now and February, but I thought I would have heard more on the forum!

I was a bit dubious at first, but I've had confirmation from the folks at Whyte & Mackay that it's genuine.

I won a bottle and so did my friend, we both turned 50 this year so quite apt.

A 50cl bottle of 50year W&M and it's valued at £5k, £7.5million if every bottle is claimed!

I suppose it's hard to value as it's not available for sale.

Great promotion though and you have a great chance to win with 2 draws left.

I wish I had known about this, I reckon the best chance to win was the first draw as assuming least entries. More and more bottles will be bought for the second draw, and the third draw will be filled with thousands of entries after Christmas gifts and festive drinking.

I'm kicking myself to have missed the first draw as was somehow missed the news, well done forum members on winning, do hope you open and drink for free. Not everyone gets the opportunity to taste a 50 year old dram.

I had seen the Facebook competition for anyone turning 50 this year to post a message and recall they were selecting a few people for this rare whisky.

A 50 year old blend bottled to celebrate Whyte & Mackay’s 175th anniversary

My tasting notes:
•Appearance: Dark amber brown (17/20), slow, fine tears, bead and taper.
•Nose: Musty and slightly dusty dunnage warehouse, nutty, walnut, cherry cola bottles, tobacco leaf, fruity rancio, dark, dark chocolate and coffee grounds, sweet and rummy molasses – this is a cigar in a comfy leather armchair by the fire whilst being served figgy pudding covered in dark chocolate sauce!
•Taste: Blackcurrant and bramble cordial – undiluted, plum jam, maraschino cherries, raisins, dates, figs, candied walnuts, brazil nut, espresso coffee and dark chocolate, so sweet for its age, musty leather bound books on mahogany bookshelves
•Finish: Long, sweet, woody, dark chocolate, red and black fruits, eventually some woody and herbal tamarind and cardamom

Overall

Incredibly juicy and sweet for a whisky of this age, there is plenty of wood as you’d expect but delivered perfectly. I could have spent hours alone just nosing this one even though the palate was just as supreme.
