I popped into Wayne Gretzky's Distillery today for a flight of 3 Canadian whiskies along with my friend Brian. We had the Ninety Nine Proof aged in Cabernet Sauvignon cask, 49.5%abv; the Ice Cask 41.5% abv aged in oak and Vidal ice wine casks and the Wayne Gretzky No. 99 ‘Red Cask’ Canadian Whisky 40%abv finished in red wine casks from the Gretzky winery.

My reputation almost preceded me and Wink the person in charge waived the fee for the 2 flights as I allowed him to experience my taste notes on the 3 pours. He also kindly suggested and gave us an in depth inside tour of the distillery which was producing spirit at the time.

Hi Brummie, they are blends from locally sourced grains , mostly rye but the profiles vary with cask type from wine to ice wine casks.

How is it produced? Double distilled in pot stills I assume.

A lot of the equipment comes from Vendome in Kentucky. They do have a pot still and another configuration as well more in the column still domain I believe with all sort of copper protuberances.

Interesting, I wonder if they have a big output capacity and perhaps we will see it over here in the future.

Fergie, the output would not compare to the bigger distilleries but they are clearly making an impression on the Canadian scene and down the road perhaps the whiskies will show up across the pond.
