Hello everyone,

I would like to ask the wise experience heads of this community where the best place is to sell my rare whisky. Would you advise I sell it to a retailer, auction house, or find a private buyer on eBay/Gumtree or whisky communities like this one?

Thank you all in advance

Look forward to any replies

I've had success and good experiences on both http://whiskyauctioneer.com/ and https://www.scotchwhiskyauctions.com/

Both of these auctions are good and I believe SWA still have no commission fees and WA is only 5%, these are the best two with Just whisky Auctions also worth a look for decent exposure and fees.
I would not bother with ebay , anyway if in UK you cannot sell them anyway but you could put the feelers out on the For Sale thread on this forum to gauge interest.

I’ve used SWA, whisky auctioneer and just whisky with good results. If its fairly well known whisky, there is no point in a reserve, imho.

I have a question on whiskybase.com? It appears to operate a different model where you can sell or buy whisky p2p? I guess it only works in countries where the licensing law allows?

I’d also be worried about counterfeits?

Has anyone used it?

I’ve bought off whiskybase from someone who had a rating etc and the transaction was fine. A bit of irony though buying a bottle of scotch whisky from someone in Germany to have it sent back to Scotland. If the seller say that they don’t ship to UK, I’d pm them to ask directly. I believe I used a credit card also, does not guarantee any buyer protection though.

Yeah they claim to be the biggest market but it does seem to be european mainland centric.

Glad it worked for you, do you know of anyone from the Uk selling on there?

No, I do not. Had previously contacted a UK seller a couple years back but can’t recall. I’ve been messaged on there by someone in UK in the past about selling, but felt scammy so left it.

Correct about being more continental, based in Holland, aren’t they? Good luck

I use it quite often; randomly ended up selling a bottle to a neighbour 6 doors down who I didn't know collected whisky.

I'd suggest using the search facility in SWA to gain a feel for the previous prices of similar bottles you want to sell.

Yeah I agree, SWA seems to have the nicest functionality although the ‘graphs’ on whiskyhammer are good too.

I might actually steer clear of whiskybase as I can’t get my head around the licensing laws and whether it is legal or not (call me a goody goody two shoes Laughing )

It is always better to do your own research. And less reliance on the opinions of unfamiliar advisers on the internet.

I've tried a few auction sites. Whisky Auctioneer (whiskyauctioneer.com) and Scotch whisky auctions (scotchwhiskyauctions.com) are up there but just look at previous months prices and some bottles can vary and you get hammered if you reserve and dont sell - infact you get hammered if you do reserve but just be wary.

I've also sold, bought and exchanged whisky with bottle exchange (bottleexchange.net) - the are incredibly cheap to both buy and sell through. I sold a few bottles within a day however have had the odd one here or there thats taken quite some time to sell but its pretty fun to use. i've just bought and re-listed and managed to grow my collection and value.
