Having agreed a swap of three samples with someone, I've had a bit of a nightmare sending them out. I've learnt the hard way that Royal Mail won't allow more than two bottles of whisky, however small, in a single package. You might think that it's none of their business what's in a package. You might think that this is petty and absurd. Nonetheless, that's the way it is. The post offices round here seem to be very hot on enforcing this rule. One also told me that Royal Mail scans packages to check. (I don't know how true this is, though.)
I'm debating what to do in future, and am seriously considering dropping out of whisky swaps altogether. Dealing with post offices is just becoming too unpleasant. (It's not only whisky - I've been getting hacked off with the sheer nosiness of them demanding to know what I'm posting for a long time now.)
The alternative is to limit future swaps to two samples. For the moment, that's what I'll be doing. But that still leaves me the hassle of having to deal with a post office. Although there are about half a dozen within easy reach of here, they all seem to be as unpleasant as one another.
What's really irritating is that Royal Mail and Parcelforce impose these same rules on retail customers, but don't apply them to contract customers. I've had packages of eight miniatures from The Whisky Exchange delivered by Parcelforce with no problems. |

I've finally got a bunch of the Nutleys sample bottles and have added my growing collection to the samples section of the forum.
Drop me a line if anyone fancies setting up a swap, either by post or in person in Glasgow. I'm chatting with a couple of folks already and am looking forward to sending some tasters out soon, let alone for some new arrivals here!
By the way, any tips for labelling the bottles? I have address label type stickers knocking about that I could cut up, but once stuck I find they tend to stay there, which might be a bit irritating for re-using a bottle and having to relabel. Do folks generally just sticker over the top? |

I have a Dymo labeller, and use that. The labels will peel off, but sometimes leave a white residue. More labels can, of course, be stuck over it. To my mind, though, it's more important that the inside of the bottle be clean than the outside
I've also received bottles labelled:
(a) with tie-on tags; and
(b) with pieces of paper Sellotaped in place.
Both worked fine! |

Yep, I agree there, I'm just always a worrier on the little details! I think I'm going for paper & sellotape technique, that's a good one. |

That's been my preferred technique, although i have received samples complete with dymo tape labels and they look very professional |

I've now received four swaps with handwritten labels. All four were neat and legible, meaning that the prime requirement (that the recipient should be able to identify the content of each bottle easily) was met. If you saw my handwriting, you'd know why I use Dymo labels |
