Michael Collins has been awarded a Double Gold Medal in the Single Malt Irish Whiskey category at the 2009 San Francisco World Spirits Competition. In addition, the Michael Collins Blend took home the silver in the Blended Irish Whiskey Category.
An Irish whisky brand imported by powerful US drinks distributor Sidney Frank Importing Co Inc, Michael Collins is distilled at the last Irish independently-owned distillery, Cooley. Michael Collins Irish Whiskies are double distilled to retain the flavour characteristics of their premium ingredients. Aged in small bourbon seasoned casks, they are described as "refined, flavourful and well-balanced".
"We are honoured to have been awarded such high marks from the prestigious San Francisco World Spirits Competition," said Sidney Frank Importing Co Inc CEO Lee Einsidler. "For Michael Collins to receive this accolade after only three years on the market is a true testament to the brand's unique taste profile and hand-craftsmanship."
Michael Collins Single Malt is bold with a distinctive and unexpected lightly peated style, the brand said. Aged for a minimum of eight to over 12 years, it has aromas of chocolate malt with light citrus and honeysuckle notes. Described as "well-rounded and complex with rich maltiness", it finishes long with a hint of chocolate and a "wonderfully settled smoke that lingers on the palate".
The 2009 San Francisco World Spirits Competition was held on 21-22 March at the Hotel Nikko. Held annually, the competition is one of the world's largest spirit competitions, attracting more than 800 spirits entries from around the world. Judging is based on blind taste tests and medals are awarded based on taste alone.
