Glengoyne named Official Whisky Sponsor of the World Fly Fishing Championships

OK not exactly a whisky event but i thought it may be of interest to some of you. Anyway here is a little about it:

Glengoyne Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky, has been named official whisky sponsor for the World Fly Fishing Championships, which will take place for the first time in Scotland from 5-12 June 2009.

The biggest such event ever held in Scotland, the Championship will showcase Scotland's superb fishing and stunning scenery with teams from around the world competing for the coveted title of World Champions.

The various sectors for the Fips-Mouche World Fly Fishing Championship include the Lake of Menteith, Loch Leven, Loch Awe and Carron valley. For the river sector, beats on the River Tay have been organised.

The town of Drymen, on the banks of Loch Lomond, is to be the venue of the event, with the Buchanan Arms and the Winnock Hotel providing the accommodation and hospitality. The competition will give anglers from all over the world the opportunity to experience the unique fishing experience, breathtaking scenery and hospitality that Scotland has to offer.

Iain Weir, Marketing Director, commenting on the agreement said: "This sponsorship is the perfect synergy for Glengoyne. With many of the events taking place within close proximity to the Glengoyne Distillery, it lets new and old visitors to the area create a more personal connection with the brand. Already popular internationally and locally, the association with the World Fly Fishing World Championship will continue to increase awareness and build presence for the Glengoyne brand.

Dr.Neil McCarry, Scottish Anglers National Association International Organiser, commented: "This is the first time that the World Fly Fishing World Championships has ever been held in Scotland and we are delighted to have such an iconic Scottish brand supporting our event. Competitors from approximately 24 countries will be participating in the championships and I am sure Glengoyne's generous hospitality will help make the event one for them all to remember."?

Modern fly fishing is said to have originated on the fast, rocky rivers of Scotland and northern England. In recent years, interest in fly fishing has surged as baby boomers have discovered the sport. Movies such as Robert Redford's film, A River Runs Through It, starring Brad Pitt, cable fishing shows, and the emergence of a competitive fly casting circuit, have also added to the sport's visibility.
