Hi McKay

American whiskey does not have the same variety as Scotch but if you have a taste for it there are a few good ones out there to try.

Here is what i like and would recommend trying.

Bourbon Whiskey:
Buffalo Trace, Elijah Craig 12 year old is good and should be a decent price. Makers Mark is worth trying. Van Winkle bourbon are all pretty good and worth trying.

Rye Whiskey:
Sazerac 18 year old rye is superb and a must try. Also Van Winkle rye is good.

Tennessee Whiskey:
Jack Daniels is Tennessee whiskey and if you have not tried it you have got to at least once, Jack Daniels is a good introduction to American Whiskeys but there are much better American whiskies to try than JD, thats just my opinion i know a lot of whisky drinkers just love JD.

I was also very impressed by the Sazerac 18 year old rye, definitely an American whiskey i would recommend any devout Scotch drinker to try.

Hi McKay,
THe only American Whiskies I had the oportunety to drink was from the Cadenhead range of foreign malts and I didnt like it. Sad
However I tried Woodford Reserve Distillers Select @ 47.2% which was a good drams to drinkLoads of flavours and rather spicy with a medium long finish.
I would love to try a George T Stagg, I've been told that this whiskey, note the e, is one of the best drams on earth. Rolling Eyes

big mac's suggested whiskeys are spot on - Buffalo Trace is probably the best by price tho

A quick note about bourbon and Tennessee whiskey. They are disctintly different and as such when exploring american whiskeys this should be counted for.

There are 2 distilleries in Tennessee, George Dickel and Jack Daniels. Unfortunately i havent yet tried anything from the former but the latter has a few good products albeit hard to find. Jack Daniels Gold Medal series and Jack Daniels Silver Select.

Some other great American whiskeys to try- Wild Turkey Rare Breed (cask Strength), Wild Turkey "Russells Reserve" , Jeffersons Reserve (small Batch) (in my opinion equal to a van Winkle) and finally Sam Houstons. The problem with Good American Whiskey tho, is it stays in America!

a couple of additions to add of great bourbons to try;

Kentucky Vintage

Rittenhouse Rye 100 proof Bottled in Bond

Johnny Drum 15yr private stock

these 3 are very good examples of what american whiskey is about.

I believe Rittenhouse is most likely the easiest to find.

I recently got a bottle of Jim Beam Black Aged 8 Years as a first try of a bourbon, as I had a very cheap contact, & am enjoying it very much.

Just picked up a bottle of Buffalo Trace, as Asda have just started stocking it (and at a reasonable price).

I'm a little surprised at the total lack of bourbons, let alone other American Whiskeys, in the UK supermarkets though. Shame.

Krakow

Stick with Asda if yuo want to buy US. If you find one of their bigger stores they have the best range of Bourbon of any of the major UK retailers.

All the usual suspects have been mentioned already for a good choice and I would not disagree with any of them. My only addition may be Rowans Creek. I ahve tried it a couple of times and it is one of the few Bourbons that is actually a bit different. Its incredibly dark and has a bit of chocolate going on.

Jonny.

Living in Louisville, KY has it's benefits... My lab is actually on the old Yellowstone Distillery.

Four Roses single barrel is delicious and so is their Small Batch.

I just picked up some Elijah Craig 18 year and am very happy with it so far.

Basil Hayden has a nice offering.

Eagle Rare is fantastic. Sweet, spicy and a long smooth finish.

Bulleit Bourbon is another delicious spirit. I have a (partial) bottle of this on my desk at work.

I went to a Bourbon tasting tonight, had some Woodford reserve, always a favorite and some Angels Envy, I've had it before and thought it was ok but the bottle we had tonight I found to be of exceptional quality.
