I'm a newbie to the forum and pretty new to malt whisky to be fair so I'm not sure whether I'm allowed to give my reasons for selecting my current dram. So feel free to scroll down to the name at the end of this piece if you don't want to read of my journey to get here.
In recent years I have occasionally tried drams in various bars and maybe a couple of times a year I've bought a bottle in my local off licence or supermarket, generally picking something on a discount and typically Laphroaig, Talisker or Jura. In my ignorance or naivety I was not even aware of the plethora of expressions of each distillery, but I knew that I liked the peaty stuff from Islay or the islands.
I'm exercising an abundance of caution in the current corona pandemic as I have, what are in normal times, a couple of trivial respiratory conditions. So provisions come via supermarket delivery, usually Tesco.
I decided that I needed to learn more about malt whisky and ventured onto YouTube where I encountered one Ralfy who I believe is known in these parts. I was particularly interested in his broad recommendations, which led me to see what malts were offered by Tesco deliveries - to my surprise there were several available that Ralfy and others on here mentioned. Whilst I shall not stop drinking what I like, I am keen to broaden my horizons away from liquid peat fires and to learn about why you people drink other stuff like Speyside, Highland and all the other whiskies.
I therefore ordered a broad spectrum of different malts, including old favourites for comparison, which were offering discounts when I last put in my Tesco order - a bit hit and miss, I know, but I'm told there are no bad whiskies. They duly arrived and last evening I started within my comfort zone with the Laphroaig 10. Yum. This evening I am mostly drinking

Welcome to the SMW forum oldcrofter, it sounds like you have a taste for the peaty stuff so I am sure you will enjoy exploring other distilleries and styles.
The supermarkets are a great place to find good deals on a few single malts and if you want to explore the wider ranges of the distilleries you already enjoy there are a few excellent online whisky shops which deliver to your door and Amazon is always worth checking out for their selection, pricing and its free delivery on orders over £20. You will find a great selection of whisky shops here https://www.scotchmaltwhisky.co.uk/shops.htm
I am drinking Glendronach12 tonight, cheers |

oldcrofter I do enjoy Old Pulteney and it gets better as you move up the range.
You may enjoy Kilchoman, a peaty Islay whisky, which I am drinking tonight, the Kilchoman Machir Bay |
