Has anybody else tried this craft whiskey from Iowa? It's not available in many places, but I had a chance to sample it at the Craft Distillers Festival in Madison, WI and thought it was a very nice rye, a style which I am not usually fond of. _________________ -Greg Long

isnt it is the whiskey made famous by Al Capone during prohibition. Not sure of the full story behind it but i think it was reinvented in recent years. Havent tasted it but i have read that it it is a spicey fresh smooth whiskey. |

I'm not sure about the Capone story, but I know they brand themselves as "Prohibition-Era Whiskey". I know they sell in Iowa, their home state, and in Illinois but shipments only come in once a month and usually sell out in a week or two. But if you're ever in Chicago, keep an eye out for it. It really is quite nice--a good spicy character without that thick, syrupy texture that dominates too many American whiskeys. _________________ -Greg Long

You got me interested and this is some info i found on the Templeton Rye.
Apparently when prohibition outlawed the manufacture and sale of alcoholic beverages in 1920, many residents of a small town in Iowa chose to become outlaws - producing a high calibre and much sought-after whiskey known as Templeton Rye.
Templeton Rye gained popularity amongst sophisticated circles, and developed the tag line "The Good Stuff" because of its high quality and smooth finish.
As word of Templeton Rye quickly spread, this Single Barrel Malt eventually caught the attention of the Capone gang, who began bootlegging hundreds of kegs of Templeton Rye per month and distributing it to speakeasies throughout New York, Chicago and as far west as Denver. Legend has it that Capone even orchestrated a mission to have a case of Templeton Rye smuggled to him while incarcerated in Alcatraz. |

I have 2 bottles of this in my cupboard, I like it pretty well for a rye, the other 2 I love are Rittenhouse and Sazerac. All 3 are what I would call "The Good Stuff". _________________ A thrill a minute might sound pretty good, but a minute is a long time to wait between thrills. -Jeff Roberts |

Confirms the Al Capone connection referred to above in the thread. |

Ask the Google about the legal troubles they had. Something about deceptive marketing and adding flavoring to the whiskey. |
