Now that I've stopped being a total whisky newbie and have the beginnings of a modest collection, I'm a bit concerned at the levels of humidity in my flat. Will the whiskies be affected badly by the humidity, or just undergo a mild change that won't cause any permanent damage or drop-off in quality?

I noticed for example that the corks make a squeaky sound when I open them - is that a bad sign? If humidity is indeed a bad thing, will it affect only the open bottles or the sealed ones as well?

Sorry if these are stupid questions, would appreciate any advice!

Years ago corks were not of the same quality that they are today and often dried out and deteriorated over time, spoiling the whisky or causing a quick rate of evapouration.

The quality of corks used in today is much higher there should be no deterioration, and there should be no problem storing your bottle upright as the alcohol vapour in the bottle should be sufficient to keep the cork moist and prevent it from drying out. Personally i turn all my stored bottles upside down for a few seconds at least once a year to moisten the cork, whether i really have to do this i dont know but it does no harm and considering the value of what is in the bottle i fell better doing it. Also storing your whisky in a cool dry dark place is a good idea also, such as a dark cupboard, but not in a warm humid kitchen.

Thanks for that Frankie. So, regarding humidity in particular, should I look into keeping them somewhere other than my flat for example? (it seems to be constantly humid in there!)

surely you must have a cool dry cupboard you can store your whisky in. I wouldnt think humidity can penetrate a bottle, well at least AFAIK but it can be effected by temperature and if your flat is normal room temp it should be ok i would think.
