Been drinking a lot of the Astar recently, very strong, but really enjoyable....
if you are in to your cocktails, this goes great in a Manhattan, chocolate bitters if you have! _________________ www.abbeywhisky.com

I assume you are referring to the Astar bottling from Glenmorangie.
I dont see the relevance of your post about Glenmorangie Astar and Manhattan cocktails as the thread is about what Islay malts you may like.
Am i missing something?

All of these distilleries produce excellent whisky or in the case of Port Ellen produced excellent whisky. I havent had an Islay whisky which i have thought to be poor but i must say for me what Ardbeg has released in recent years stands ou above the rest if you like Ardbeg and are feeling flush there is no better dram than the Ardbeg 17 year old IMO.

When i want my smoke hit it has got to be Ardbeg or Laphroaig. Any of the others for a gentler hit, i couldnt fault any of them.

i agree, i voted ardbeg, but really depending on my mood it could have been any other islay...
And i have a soft spot for bruichladdich being family owned and run. Not many distilleries left like that (springbank is the only other i can think of) |

For my smoke hit i would turn to Laphroaig but love the Ardbeg also. As said above the others are great whiskys also but i probably purchase Laphroaig and Ardbeg 10 times more often than any of the others.

I am quite new to the world of malt whisky but i have taken a recent liking to Bruichladdich. But i am looking forward to trying the others especially ardbeg which seems to be well liked around here.

Hi Arty and welcome to the world of malt whisky and to the forum. You will find that Bruichladdich acquired new owners around 2000 and they have since expanded the range available from the distillery including many limited releases so you wont ever be short of choice from them. I can highly recommend the Ardbeg 10 or indeed anything from Ardbeg.
Anyway i hope you enjoy discovering new whiskies and if you need anything i am sure someone on here will be happy to help.

I like them all but Lagavulin and Laphroaig would be my first choice most of the time then Ardbeg 10. But as i say i enjoy them all. |

Like others i like them all but have a particular liking for Laphroaig - I will never understand why they stopped the Laphroaig 15 year old

Depends on my mood but i probably now drink Laphroaig 10 most out of any of the Islay malts. |

I have voted Laphroaig and I particularly favour the quarter cask although the intense smoke of Ardbeg 10 and Lagavulin 16 also sit firmly among my favourites.
I do however have a soft spot for the Bunna and the Laddies, in fact there isn't an Islay that I haven't liked

As a relative newcomer to Single Malts, I had to vote Laphroaig.
I was told by a friend to try Laphroaig before I buy a bottle. That sort of advice always causes me to do this opposite, and this was no exception. So glad I did!
The only Laphroaig available in this part of Canada right now, is the Quarter Cask. Fortunately, that is the one I was most interested in. Once the bottle is opened, and it settles in, it is one of the most satisfying drinks I have ever tasted. The smokiness and peatiness are most intriquing!
Cheers,

Not at all surprised to see Ardbeg at the top here but I found it ver hard to hoose -think Islay ismy favourite whisky region and Brichladdich seems to go from strength to strength atm |
