I have just got so many favourite Islay malts.

The Ardbeg 10 y.o is great and such great value but the Ardbeg 1977 is the best Ardbeg (maybe even Islay) I have tasted.

Bowmore 17 is superb and is a classic as far as i am concerned. It is complex, fruity and balanced, with some peat, but it is not medicinal like some Islay whiskies. In my opinion Bowmore probably offer the biggest range of decent whisky on Islay.

Lagavulin 16 y.o is my choice from the Lagavulin distillery.

I dont think i have tasted an Islay malt which i havent very much enjoyed but the above stand out for me.

Cheers,

Davy

Based on what you are getting for your money i would agree the Ardbeg 10 has got to be the best buy Islay.

This would be my choice from the Bowmore distillery. They do have a good range of bottlings.

Lagavulin 16 would be my choice of Islay malts.

Ardbeg 10yo and the Laphroaig 10yo are also very good choices IMHO and very good value.

Also Bowmore do have a great choice as already mentioned here.

I'm the first for Bunnahabhain - the first Islay malt I ever tasted (when I was on Bute, but thats beside the point)... however, my favourite has to be Jura (and in particular Superstition!)

The Lagavulin 16 year old is in a class of its own IMO.

I simply do not like heavily smoked, peaty whisky just not to my taste. When a whisky is heavily smoky i think it over powers and kills the other flavours in the whisky.

I have always found it strange why so many whisky drinkers love the heavily peated/smoky whiskies produced on Islay. It would be interesting to know the average age of these smoky whisky drinker. I have a theory they will not be young and due to there age have a weakened sense of taste hense they require a more powerful tasting whisky to stimulate there taste buds.
