Bruichladdich Octomore Orpheus 2.2

14th December 2009

Bruichladdich today launched the latest addition to the Octomore series of bottlings - the Octomore Orpheus 2.2

The special 2009 release Orpheus is bottled at a massive 140ppm and has been matured in an American Bourbon cask, before being transfered to a Chateau Petrus wine cask. Orpheus is 5 year old and was bottled at 61% ABV and is a limited edition of 15,000 bottles. This dram is heavily peated and sweet. It should be available from specialist whisky retailers from this week priced around £80 - £90. Get it while stocks last.

If you you tried the earlier Octomore releases, you may be interested to see what influence the Chateau Petrus wine cask has had on the Orpheus, as Chateau Petrus wine is considered a rare super premium wine. But does a super premium wine guarantee a premium whisky, let us know if you taste it.

Octomore Orpheus Tasting Notes

This enthusiastic colourful description of the new Octomore Orpheus is the official tasting notes from Jim McEwan.
  • Colour: Mahogany red.
  • Body: Strong and muscular, absolutely in top condition. The texture is as smooth as the rocks on Islayís western seaboard. An amazing warmth floods throughout the body lifting you to a level of pleasure you have never experienced from a malt whisky.
  • Nose/Palate: The aromas explode from the glass. Itís peat smoke, wet seaweed, archangel tar, wet sailcloth, all the Islay character is on the flood tide, then with time and a little water the wonderful sweet red fruit notes from the Petrus wine casks emerge; cherry, cranberry and pomegranate, Turkish delight, the sweetness of oak and barley slipstream, together they bring a sensational contrast to the phenolic maelstrom. Itís a journey of discovery for the senses, which are on full alert coping with physical heat, but they are loving it. Itís something they have never experienced before and they will never forget.

This spirit cries Ďfreedomí untainted by additives and attitudes. Let the spirit seep into your soul. Itís revelation in a glass.
  • Finish: Itís ĎBeauty and the Beastí Islay style. Total romance with a sensational ending, canít tell you about it you HAVE to try it, itís wicked.Ē
