Bladnoch 2024 Single Cask Collection

Bladnoch, Scotlandís southernmost distillery, has released its 2024 Single Cask Collection of Lowland single malt Scotch whiskies.

This release marks the conclusion of a five-year series, with the Bladnoch 2024 Single Cask Collection featuring six distinctive single cask, single malt whiskies. Each one has been carefully selected by Dr. Nick Savage, Bladnochís Master Distiller, to highlight some of the distilleryís finest casks.

The annual release collection underscores the distilleryís taste-first approach to whisky making, blending a variety of cask types and aged spirits to offer a diverse array of taste profiles.

With a rich history spanning over two centuries, Bladnoch Distilleryís new single cask range draws from the exceptional spirit aged in its 207-year-old bluestone warehouses, situated on the banks of the River Bladnoch in Scotlandís Lowland whisky region.

The legacy of the brand has seen a revival in recent years, now led by Dr. Nick Savage and owner David Prior, who acquired Bladnoch Distillery in 2015, becoming the first Australian businessman to own a Scotch whisky distillery. The 2024 Single Cask Collection marks a significant milestone for the distillery, featuring two single cask releases distilled in 2017 under the new ownership.

Each whisky in the single cask range is unique in cask type and rarity, bottled at cask strength, and non-chill filtered with natural colour.

Dr Nick Savage, Master Distiller at Bladnoch Distillery, said: "Our taste-first philosophy, rooted in our whisky-making knowledge provides us with the freedom to explore a wide array of cask types and vintages to demonstrate the breadth and quality of the distilleryís maturing stock and showcase our bold Galloway spirit.

"There is an incredible breadth of taste experiences within this yearís selection, from the sweet, floral notes of the first single cask whisky to the herbal, nutty, oak characteristics of the final vintage single malt whisky.

"Only the most remarkable casks which have displayed exceptional, unique characteristics or extraordinary maturation have been selected from our 207-year-old bluestone warehouses to craft the Bladnoch 2024 Single Cask Collection."

Bladnoch Single Cask 2024/03 Review

Distilled in October 2017, matured in a canasta butt cask  no. 267, non-chill filtered, naturally coloured and bottled in March 2024 at 58.3% ABV. The cask produced 676 bottles.

Producer's Tasting Notes:

Nose: A rich nose, candied apple and a little apricot and pear, a lovely Demerara sugar sweetness all infused with a very gentle peat smoke.

Taste: Deliciously sweet creamy toffee and honey infused with some gentle smoke coats the mouth, the candied apple along with a touch of pear from the nose joins the sweet pleasure. The sweet smoke builds.

Finish: Deliciously long. Cream sherry infused sweet smoke peaks with a lovely bonfire edge.

Comment: A stunning cream sherried smoky dram and the bottling strength just adds to the flavour pleasure. The delicious sweet peat smoke builds with each mouthful and pairs well with the creamed sherry.

Bladnoch Single Cask 2024/05 Review

Distilled in December 2006, matured in a sherry butt cask  no. 445, non-chill filtered, naturally coloured and bottled in March 2024 at 49.9% ABV. The cask produced 660 bottles.

Producer's Tasting Notes:

Nose: Sweet sherried raisins and sultanas infused with a mix of toasty vanilla, honey, dark chocolate and coffee.

Taste: Deliciously rich and vibrant. Burnt sweet raisins, dark chocolate coated toffee lead the charge, accompanied by a touch of cherry, a little zesty lemon, cinnamon, then a lovely late burst of delicious oak spice and ginger.

Finish: Longish, a bit of a nuttiness and a little peppery now, the lovely dark sherried fruit slowly fades first leaving some lovely lingering, slightly drying, mature oak to have the last word.

Comment: A deliciously mature single sherry cask release which is up there in quality with the likes of the outstanding single casks of this age GlenDronach has turned out in the past. An absolutely outstanding whisky, if you are looking to spoil yourself and you enjoy a sherried dram look no further.

SMW Whisky Score 93/100
