Choosing the Best Whisky Glass
The glass you choose can make a surprisingly significant difference to your tasting experience. The right glass concentrates aromas, allows colours to be properly assessed, and enhances the overall pleasure of each dram.
Glencairn Glass ⭐ Recommended
The definitive whisky-tasting glass. Its tulip shape concentrates aromas at the slightly narrowed rim while the wide bowl allows the whisky to breathe. Comfortable, affordable, and universally available.
Copita / Nosing Glass
A stemmed glass with a tulip bowl and narrow rim, similar to a small sherry glass. Preferred by many professionals for formal tasting. The stem prevents hand-warming; the narrow rim concentrates aromas superbly.
Tumbler / Rocks Glass
The wide, heavy-bottomed glass of bars and films. Excellent for whisky with ice or as a highball but not ideal for nosing — the wide opening disperses aromas rather than concentrating them.
Snifter
A balloon-bowl brandy glass that concentrates aromas powerfully but can be overpowering with high-ABV whiskies due to alcohol vapour. Best for older, lower-strength expressions.
Practical Tip
Whatever glass you choose, ensure it is thoroughly clean and free of any soap residue. If in doubt, rinse with a little of the whisky you are about to taste before pouring your measure.
