Ardbeg Vintage_Y2K 25 Year Old The Oldest and Rarest Release in the Millennium Series

8th September 2026
Ardbeg Vintage_Y2K 25 Year Old: Ardbeg’s oldest and rarest Millennium Series whisky. Ardbeg Vintage_Y2K 25 Year Old completes the Islay distillery’s ultra-rare trilogy, combining historic Ardbeg spirit with a first-time finish in Spanish Tempranillo casks.

Ardbeg has completed its Vintage_Y2K series with the release of Ardbeg Vintage_Y2K 25 Year Old, the oldest and rarest whisky in the three-part collection. The 25-year-old Islay single malt was distilled around the time Ardbeg returned to full production in 2000 and features some of the earliest spirit from the distillery to be finished in Tempranillo red wine casks from Spain.

The limited-edition whisky marks the culmination of Ardbeg’s Vintage_Y2K collection, which celebrates the pivotal period surrounding the distillery’s revival at the turn of the millennium. Each release combines spirit from Ardbeg’s historic 51-year-old still with maturation techniques that introduced new dimensions to the distillery’s character.

Ardbeg Vintage_Y2K celebrates the distillery’s return to production

The year 2000 was a defining moment in the history of Ardbeg Distillery on Islay. After being saved from closure in 1997, the distillery underwent an extensive renovation before returning to full production in 2000.

The period also coincided with the global anticipation surrounding the millennium and fears over the so-called millennium bug, making the turn of the century an appropriate backdrop for a series of whiskies looking back at Ardbeg’s own period of transformation.

The Vintage_Y2K releases draw on spirit produced using Ardbeg’s historic 51-year-old still, which was finally retired in 2001 after decades of service. The series pairs this historic spirit with experimental maturation techniques that were new to Ardbeg, creating three distinct interpretations of the distillery’s heavily peated single malt.

Ardbeg 25 Year Old finished in Tempranillo casks

Ardbeg Vintage_Y2K 25 Years Old is the third and final release in the series and is consequently expected to be of particular interest to collectors seeking to complete the Vintage_Y2K trilogy.

The whisky was initially matured in bourbon casks before being selected by Ardbeg’s Director of Whisky Creation, Dr Bill Lumsden, for a distinctive secondary maturation. The whisky was transferred into Tempranillo red wine casks from Bodega Numanthia in north-west Spain, marking the first time Ardbeg has used these casks for its whisky.

Bodega Numanthia is known for its intensely flavoured Tempranillo wines and ancient vines, with some of the vines reportedly dating back as far as Ardbeg itself. The Spanish wine casks bring an additional layer of richness and fruit character to the heavily peated Islay spirit.

The resulting Ardbeg 25 Year Old combines peat smoke and the distillery’s characteristic coastal profile with richer notes of coffee, smoked fruit, barbecue ribs, paprika and sweet chilli. The whisky is bottled at 48% ABV, an alcohol strength chosen to complement its flavour profile.

Dr Bill said: "It's been an honour to celebrate Ardbeg’s reawakening in 2000 through the ultra-rare whiskies of our Vintage_Y2K series. With each release more limited than the last, these smoky anomalies bring together Ardbeg’s heritage and spirit of innovation to memorable effect."

He added: "The oldest and rarest release of the series yet, Ardbeg Vintage_Y2K 25 Years Old is a fitting finale. Crafted from some of the final spirit distilled in our historic still, then finished in Bodega Numanthia’s intensely flavoured Tempranillo red wine casks, it celebrates both Ardbeg’s enduring character and its restless spirit of innovation. Collectors will love this whisky’s rich, zesty complexity. Aromas of chilli chocolate, smoked blackcurrants and paprika are followed by tastes of coffee, spare ribs and distinctively Ardbeggian menthol and lime pickle. A memorable final chapter in our Vintage_Y2K series."

Completing the Ardbeg Vintage_Y2K collection

The launch of Ardbeg Vintage_Y2K 25 Years Old completes a trilogy of limited-edition whiskies created around the period of Ardbeg’s return to full production.

Ardbeg Vintage_Y2K 23 Years Old offers a citrussy and sooty expression matured in bourbon and Oloroso sherry casks.

The Ardbeg Vintage_Y2K 24 Years Old takes a more delicate approach, combining bourbon and Amontillado sherry cask maturation. The use of Amontillado sherry casks represented another first for the Islay distillery.

With the final release now joining the collection, the Ardbeg Vintage_Y2K 25 Year Old provides the oldest expression in the series and the first Ardbeg whisky to feature a finish in Tempranillo wine casks.

For collectors interested in completing the Vintage_Y2K trilogy, the remaining bottles of the 23 and 24-year-old releases are still available in limited quantities.

Ardbeg Y2K 25 Year Old has been bottled at 48% ABV and has a RRP of £730 and the other whiskies in the Vintage_Y2K series are available to purchase from

Producer's Tasting Notes:

Nose: Very subtly smoky, with hints of smoked blackcurrants, chilli chocolate, and a curious note of aged balsamic vinegar. A few drops of water brings hints of linseed oil and smoked paprika.
