Description: Glenrothes does not produce their single malts with a years old minimum age statement, but instead, releases specific vintages. In this case the very best casks from 1992 (with the bottling date individually written on each bottle). Like fine wines, the personality of each vintage will vary whilst the distillery character remains the same. Owing to its very nature, this vintage is finite and rare, with the 1992 date of extinction estimated in 2006.
Tasting Notes: The nose is soft and fruity with aromas of ripe black plums and liquorice. The palate is again soft, but with fresh flavours of citrus and orange zest plus a touch of raisin from the Sherry casks. What makes this malt stand out though, is its intensely rich and creamy mouthfeel.
Method of Production: Lightly peated Scottish malted barley is ground and mashed with hot spring water in a mash tun. The water is drawn from the distillerys private spring in the nearby Glen Dounie. The wort is cooled and fermented in large wooden washbacks. The wash is then distilled twice in uniquely onion-shaped copper pot stills (the boiling bowl is above the ogee to increase reflux). The new make spirit, which is very sweet and fruity, is placed in mainly American oak (butts, puncheons & hogsheads) but also some Spanish oak to mature for approximately twelve years. The vintage release is then created by vatting specially selected casks from one year, which is then chill filtered and bottled.
