Kirsteen Campbell Named New Macallan Master Whisky Maker

2nd October 2019
A new era at The Macallan as Kirsteen Campbell takes on the roll of The Macallan Master Whisky Maker.

Kirsteen Campbell The Macallan Master Whisky Maker

Following the departure in July of The Macallan's Master Distiller Dr. Nick Savage who has left to join the Bladnoch distillery The Macallan distillery has appointed Kirsteen Campbell as its new Master Whisky Maker.

Kirsteen who is originally from the Highland town of Thurso in Caithness studied Food Science at university in Glasgow and went on to gain a Diploma in Distilling, she started her whisky career after her studies in a temporary job with Diageo and it was while at Diageo in the lab doing chemical analysis it was discovered that she had a good sense of smell, she was on the sensory panel as she had passed that test and the sensory work evolved from there.

Kirsteen became the Master Blender for the Cutty Sark Scotch blended whisky brand at the age of just 33, if you have tried the excellent Cutty Sark Prohibition this was Kirsteen's work. She then moved to the role of Master Blender for The Famous Grouse Scotch blended whisky in early 2016 with some of her recent creations for the Famous Grouse brand being The Famous Grouse Cask Series, an affordable series of cask inspired  blended whiskies designed to showcase how different types of oak cask can influence flavour such as The Famous Grouse Bourbon Cask.

During her time at Edrington Kirsteen would have become very familiar with all of the groups portfolio of whiskies including The Macallan so she will be taking up the role of The Macallan Master Whisky Maker with the knowledge of The Macallan whisky which she has already gained during her time with The Famous Grouse.

Kirsteen Campbell, Master Whisky Maker with The Macallan Mastery Team - Stuart MacPherson, Master of Wood; Sarah Burgess, Lead Whisky Maker; Polly Logan, Whisky Maker; Steven Bremner, Whisky Maker; and Russell Greig, Sample Room Assistant.

Kirsteen wont be alone in her new role, she will be heading up a six person "Whisky Mastery Team" in the creation of the Macallan single malt, the team comprises of Kirsteen Campbell, Master Whisky Maker; Stuart MacPherson, Master of Wood; Sarah Burgess, Lead Whisky Maker; Polly Logan, Whisky Maker; Steven Bremner, Whisky Maker; and Russell Greig, Sample Room Assistant.

The Macallan Master Whisky Maker works with The Macallan Whisky Mastery Team to create and elevate The Macallanís exceptional portfolio of whiskies. The enhanced formation of the team will see maturation and whisky making working hand-in-hand from the very beginning of the journey to bring out the best of spirit and wood, as The Macallanís exceptional oak casks are the single greatest contributor to its outstanding quality, natural colour and distinctive aromas and flavours.

Kirsteenís appointment and The Macallanís enhanced focus on the art of whisky making and mastery of the team, certainly marks the next chapter in the history of this world-renowned single malt whisky.

Kirsteen commented: "I feel very honoured to become part of The Macallan Whisky Mastery Team and to be entrusted with creating this remarkable single malt whisky with the Whisky Mastery Team."

Hopefully we will see the entry level Macallan expressions getting back to the quality they once were and like the affordable Famous Grouse Cask Series created by Kirsteen whisky drinkers will see something good and affordable from The Macallan with Kirsteen and her team at the reigns, time will tell.

You will find the the current Macallan core whisky range available from specialist online whisky retailers such as The Whisky Exchange, The Whisky Shop and Master of Malt
