Glen Moray 10YO Fired Oak Picks Up World Whiskies Award

18th April 2019
Glen Moray's Fired Oak impresses the judges at the World Whiskies Awards 2019 and pick up the Speyside 12 Year Old and Under category award.

Glen Moray 10 Year Old Fired OakGlen Moray has announced that Glen Moray Fired Oak 10 Year Old Single Malt Whisky, which they launched in the UK back in November 2018, has won the Speyside 12 Year Old and Under category at this year's World Whiskies Awards.

"The Speyside 12 Year Old and Under is a very prestigious category containing some exceptional whiskies. Delivering standout character and flavour to win the category is a credit to the distillery team. We are incredibly proud of this achievement and look forward to introducing Glen Moray Fired Oak to single malt lovers all over the world", says Master Distiller, Graham Coull

The World Whiskies Awards, held at the end of March in London, award the very best international styles of whiskies from around the world, as chosen by a panel of 40 judges from 13 different countries.

Master Distiller, Graham Coull was inspired to create Glen Moray Fired Oak Single Malt Whisky by the increase in popularity of American Bourbon and the success of the sweeter flavour within the drinks market. One of the key elements for producing American Bourbon is that the spirit has to be aged in a new charred (virgin) oak cask which imparts intense flavour to the spirit.

Glen Moray Fired Oak is a Single Malt Whisky matured for 10 years in ex-Bourbon casks and finished in heavily charred virgin American Oak casks, resulting in a whisky which is sublimely smooth with intense spice and toasted vanilla flavour.

Graham Coull says: "I am delighted that Fired Oak has been chosen as the winner of the Speyside 12 Year Old and Under category at the World Whiskies Awards. I am pleased with how much character the virgin oak provides over a relatively short period of time. This added intensity accentuates the traditional ex Bourbon flavours to create a whisky which is well rounded and full of character."

William Morrison's Tasting Notes:

Nose: An enticing barley sugar candy sweetness, some vanilla toffee, pear, green apple and a touch of coconut.

Taste: A delicious concentrated mix of apple, spice and a barley sugar sweetness leads the charge, closely followed by some vanilla, a little zesty orange and lemon and a lovely touch of oak hanging around the background.

Finish: A longish finish. More vanilla and a little candied fruit, toasted oak spice comes more to the fore but is kept in check by the sweet candied fruit. Some late liquorice.

Comment: No surprises, just what you would expect from 10 years in ex-Bourbon casks and then a finish in heavily charred American Oak casks. A delicious balance of sweet and spice, a cracking Speyside whisky for your money and a very welcome addition to the Glen Moray range. I can only imagine how good this would be bottled at 46% plus but at 40% it has my thumbs up for the price.

If you enjoy a bourbon cask matured Speyside style of whisky and are looking for something new to put in your Christmas stocking then this wont break the bank and most importantly it is a very enjoyable dram.

SMW Score 86/100

Bottled at 40% ABV the new Glen Moray 10 Year Old Fired Oak has an RRP of 39.99 and is now available from specialist online whisky retailers such as The Whisky Exchange, The Whisky Shop and Master of Malt
