The Glenlivet is perhaps the best known of all Scotch single malts. Its founder, George Smith, with the encouragement of the Duke of Gordon, was the first to apply for a legal distilling license in 1824. George Smith was going against popular sentiment at the time in doing so. The illegal distillers where not to happy with Smith's move and some of them even threatened him with death, the Duke of Gordon even gave Smith 2 pistols for protection, which can still be seen today in the visitor centre at the distillery. Smiths foresight to see the economic opportunities of legal distilling gave The Glenlivet a head start on all the competition that is yet to be overcome. It is said that Smiths true grit and the pair of hair-trigger pistols given to him by the the Duke of Gordon ensured the Glenlivet Distilleries survival.

The distillery belongs to the Chivas and Glenlivet Group, which was bought by the Pernod-Ricard in 2001. The only period in which The Glenlivet has closed was during the second world war, because of a lack of barley. Glenlivet single malt is also used in premium blends such as Chivas Regal and Royal Salute.
