The Glendronach distillery was
established by James Allardice in 1826,
but was unfortunately the distillery was
burnt down in 1837. The licence and the
burnt out distillery were sold to Walter
Scott. The distillery closed in 1916 and
in 1920 was bought by William Grants son
Charles Grant. Glendronach remained in
the Grant family until 1960 when it was
sold to William Teacher & Sons. In
1966, Teacher's increased the number
of stills to four. Teacher's was acquired
by Allied Breweries, now under the control
of Allied Distillers Ltd. The Glendronach
distillery was mothballed in 1995, but
resumed production again in 2004. The malt
produced is used in Ballantine and
Teachers blends. Glendronach is the last
remaining coal-fired whisky distillery
in Scotland, but will have switched to a
more environmentally friendly fuel
source by 2006 in order to comply
with new European Union rules. This
means that coal-fired stills will be a
thing of the past in Scotland.
