Whisky Focus - GlenAllachie 8 Year Old Koval Rye Quarter Cask Wood Finish Review

GlenAllachie 8 Year Old Koval Rye Quarter Cask Wood Finish

30th September 2019
Review of the GlenAllachie 8 Year Old Koval Rye Quarter Cask Wood Finish.

GlenAllachie 8 Year Old Koval Rye Quarter Cask Wood FinishThe Glenallachie 8 year old Koval Rye Quarter Cask Wood Finish was initially matured in American oak wood barrels and then underwent an additional maturation period in organic Rye quarter casks from Chicago’s Koval Distillery.

With the greater whisky-to-wood ratio in the smaller Koval rye quarter casks you would expect that the rich spicy flavour of the former Rye casks to impart its influence on the Glenallachie whisky more rapidly but just how much of that Koval Rye cask spiciness is in the this Glenallachie 8 year old, Glenallachie tells me that the whisky was monitored very closely during the finishing period to produce an exciting, sensational result.

The Glenallachie 8 year old Koval Rye Quarter Cask Wood Finish is bottled at 48% ABV, it is naturally coloured, non-chill-filtered and has an RRP of £54.99.

William Morrison's Tasting Notes:

Nose: An equal amount of sweet vanilla and honey infused with spiced oak which has a caramel and cinnamon edge.

Taste: A little spiced oak at first accompanied by slightly candied lemon citrus, honey and a mix of cinnamon and ginger, then a second wave of oak spices gathers, more intense than the first wave.

Finish: Spicy oak and a little sweet apple fruitiness linger for a while before bowing out to leave some gentle and slightly drying pepper and cloves.

Comment: Not as spicy as billed on the initial mouthful but the spices soon gather and hang around for each mouthful which follows. It is a little thin on the body and it is youngish at 8 years but still an interesting dram. I am not so sure it is a £55 single malt, £35 at a push, but how many whiskies could I say that about, it is a decent dram, something a little different but I have to think if I fancy a spicy Rye whiskey, then how good a Rye whiskey could I buy for £55.

SMW Score 80/100
