Whisky Focus - The GlenAllachie 15 Year Old Review

The GlenAllachie 15 Year Old Review

30th September 2019
Review of the new GlenAllachie 15 Year Old.

The GlenAllachie 15 Year OldThe GlenAllachie 15 Year Old is the latest addition to the Speyside distillery's core range, it is described by Master Distiller Billy Walker as the perfect representation of the distillery’s DNA. He believes the 15 year old is an exceptional balance of the distillery’s spirit and the influence of the Sherry casks used during maturation.

Technically you could say that this is a wood finish whisky but it has been released as a part of the GlenAllachie core range and not the recently launched wood finish range, slotting in between the 12 and 18 year old.

The GlenAllachie 15 Year Old has been finished for around 20 months in two types of Sherry casks – Pedro Ximenez and Oloroso puncheons and hogsheads which the distillery say were chosen to deliver depth and finish to the whisky, and to add notes that enhance the distinctive butterscotch and chocolate flavours of The GlenAllachie spirit.

The GlenAllachie 15 year old joins the 10 year old Cask Strength; 12 year old; 18 year old; and 25 year old in The GlenAllachie core range which was first launched in 2018.

The Glenallachie 15 year old is bottled at 46% ABV, it is naturally coloured, non-chill-filtered and has an RRP of £62.99.

William Morrison's Tasting Notes:

Nose: Sweet dark cherry and damson jam, blackberries and orange. A little vanilla custard and sweet oak spice hiding behind the fruit.

Taste: Plum pudding and sweet raisins with a touch of orange sauce all infused with sweet spice and a nice light late touch of vanilla toffee and dark chocolate.

Finish: The sherried fruits bow out to leave the now slightly peppered gentle sweet oak spice to have the last word.

Comment: It shows the potential the whisky has with longer in a sherry cask. A pleasure in the mouth but short lived on the finish. Still a nice clean lightly sherried everyday dramming easy drinker from the Glenallachie although it difficult to overlook the 12 year old expression at around £20 less.

SMW Whisky Score 85/100
