Nose
88
Quite a subtle peat and sherry combo at first mixed with paint fumes,(much better than it sounds).
Cigar smoke, ashy, hints of sage and biscuit.
With time in the glass the biscuit and ash notes are the most prominent, the biscuit notes will be from the grain I assume?
Nice, if a slightly unusual nose.
Taste
86
A big shot of ashy peat, much more than the nose hinted at, bags of spice and ash but also drying on the palate.
Plenty of sweetness mixed in with the peat, stewed fruits, plum, prune, ripe gooseberry but the peat & spice take centre stage..
A slight metallic note creeps in at this point but it does not affect things too much.
The peat just keeps growing
Finish
83
I can`t decide,it is long, spicy & peaty but there it is again, that metallic taste or is it a hint of sulphur, anyway it loses a few points here but still not bad, certainly no game changer for me.
I enjoyed this, it is a quality blend that you can get for a reasonable price at most auctions.
This 12 year is said to contain 24 grain and malt whiskies, including Lagavulin, Craigellachie and Glen Elgin.
What is not to like about that sort of pedigree? _________________ Pour me a glass please. |
