Diageo has unveiled its Special Releases 2019 line-up, eight cask strength, single malt, Scotch whiskies launched under a 'Rare By Nature' theme. The eight whiskies originate from the Cardhu, Cragganmore, Dalwhinnie, Lagavulin, Mortlach, Pittyvaich, Talisker and Glen Ord distillery's.

If money was no object I would have the Dalwhinnie 30, Talisker 15 and a few bottles of the Lagavulin 12 - I may even give my regular annual special release purchase of a bottle of the Lagavulin 12 a miss this year as a protest as I am not at all happy about the pricing on this these days, way over priced for a mass release 12 year old.

110 quid for 15 years old is hella steep, but I got a bottle of Tali 15. I’ll try and get a sample somewhere before committing, I can always return it after all.

£110 the the Talisker is quite the price, considering how much the 18 costs, but then again, it is cask strength. Ended up buying one anyway.

Apart from Talisker, the pittyvaich looks interesting, but the price....

£1500 for the Mortlach is actually beyond a disgrace, I am struggling to find the words to describe my utter contempt for that sort of pricing strategy.

None of these bottlings are what you call good value, but if the Dalwhinnie is £500 for a 30 year & the Pittyvaich is £330 for a 29 year how can a 26 year be worth that for the Mortlach?

The Mortlach premiumisation experiment has fallen flat on its face already, why do they persist in trying to convince us that as a brand it is something special, most of the latest offerings are quite bland, though the 20 year is decent enough.

Perhaps they put silly price tags on like this to make the others look like more of a bargain, maybe I have already fallen into that trap by my comments above, Doh?

The Cragganmore does look interesting and is something a little different possibly?

I also like the line `There is an undisclosed number of bottles` on some of these, to try and wet your appetite, what that means is there is bucket loads of the stuff so no need to rush out in a panic on that score, there is enough for everyone worldwide 3 times over probably, Talisker have had limited releases of 20000 bottles before now.

Was thinking of the Glen Ord but the price is a little offputting and as you say Linc, there will be stacks about.

Got myself a nice unpeated Caol Ila 18 from the distillery this year, from their 2017 limited release, so will probably just wait awhile.

The bottle numbers were shown on pre release pictures of the packaging tubes at the bottom.

Lagavulin 12yo 60,762 bottles
Talisker 15yo 42,222 bottles
Singleton of glen ord 18yo 31,656 bottles

Not exactly rare by nature!

Any feedback on any of these? Good, bad, or the overpriced.

The Talisker and Cardhu caught my eye, but overall not fussed, but if there is a good one, do share your thoughts.

I have the Talisker 15. Its fine, but overpriced. The extra age and ABV really does impart a big difference, but for me the price differential is far too large.

I’d suggest getting the 57degrees north and saving some pennies.
