I have found Johnnie Walker Blue Label bottlings to be consistent with its flavor profile over the years. There has been JW Blue Label limited editions which has focused on the profile of a whisky from a single distillery but the standard bottling has remained the same in my experience. |

I think many JW limited editions are only limited because of the label and packaging which it is presented in, as a drinker rather than collector this does nothing for me so I do not pay extra for limited edition packaging alone. |

I would say almost all of the Johnnie Walker Blue Label limited editions are only limited because of the packaging and contain the standard Blue Label whisky. As far as I am aware editions such as the Johnnie Walker Blue Label Cities Collection and Porsche Design Studio where limited because of the bottle design only.
There have been very few bottlings where the whisky in the bottle has been a limited edition, other than the bottlings you have already mentioned, the Casks Edition and Ghost and Rare. The only other obvious expression was the Johnnie Walker Blue Label King George V Edition which is a superb whisky but you need deep pockets if you want to drink this.
Perhaps Johnnie Walker realise that JW Blue fans are looking for and are willing to pay for something more, hence the launch of the Ghost and Rare series last year. |

I need to taste the King George V, I heard that its amazing. But what release? the blue box of 2006-2007? or all releases are the same blend??
The Ghost and Rare are very very good, more spicy and smoke IMO (Im very new in the reviews sorry) |

Here is a head to head I did in March 2017:-
this type of KG5 bottle
https://www.scotchwhiskyauctions.com/auctions/115_the-77th-auction/170356_johnnie-walker-king-george-v/
Head to Head with Other premium JW in order of lowest abv first. This is the 2nd H2H with these 3 JW.
JW Odyssey 40% 2013
JW King George V 43% (early edition)
JW Private Collection 46.8% 2014
None of these are cheap for what you are getting but you are also paying for the premium packaging.
The Odyssey is silky smooth and very nice but at 40% does not challenge the palate enough, needs to 46% minimum.
The KG5 is a great whisky and anyone who says a blend cannot match a single malt is wrong.
The Private Collection for me is not as good as the other 2 because it costs more but I get the feeling there is older whisky in the mix as it reminds me of long gone Highland whisky.
The cheapest is the KG5 and because of that and the profile, is my pick of the three. None of these will smash your palate and any peat heads who have had your palate destroyed by 60% Laphy or Caol Ila will probably not get the subtlety of these.
They are not worth it shop price wise but the KG5 can be picked up quite reasonably at auction and even I will admit that on a display cabinet it does look the part but at least the quality of the spirit backs it up. _________________ Pour me a glass please. |
