Nose
Old books, mulled wine, full bodied red wine, red wine jus, blackberry, red currant jelly.
Taste
Very, very rich on the palate, creamy, full bodied but nowhere near as explosive as you would imagine at 60% like the usual 105. Forrest fruits, blackberry, black cherry, dark ginger cake, a little black treacle, mulled wine spices, hints of orange and rich dark fudge, I think you get the picture. I also detect some peat in with the spice.
Finish
Long, very smooth, rich but not over rich with spicy tail.
Comments
Water is not needed, unbelievable but I will give it a go.
With water :-
Very little change on the palate with 4 drops of water just perhaps a little nutmeg and now touches of cinnamon.
The palate is a little more restrained but the flavours just keep on coming, as before just the strength of the flavours has actually increased, the water has opened things up very nicely and now with water for the first time it shows its age, the wood makes an appearance but for me adds to the experience.
I did put this at 96 but settled on 95 as after the water there was a little bitterness but this is a beautiful sherried whisky. Gets extra marks for the depth of profile and how refined it is at 60% which really caught me by surprise. I am not a sherry head yet I think this is possibly the best sherried whisky I have tried _________________ Pour me a glass please. |

That will teach you for adding the water . It really is a cracking dram, I wish I had bought a full bottle when I had a chance, I only had a 100ml sample a generous friend gave me, I rarely add water, I only do it if I feel the alcohol is too overpowering which I didn't find was the case with the 105 40 year old |

That is some friend for giving you 10cl of this stuff, agree with you at 60% it is not overpowering in anyway, costs silly money now.
I am just wondering if the 20 year 105 is worth a purchase, have you tried it? _________________ Pour me a glass please. |

I dread to think what a 50 year 105 will cost. _________________ Pour me a glass please. |

How much was the 40th anniversary at release? I was at a Glenfarclas tasting a couple of weeks ago and the 50th anniversary of 105 got a passing mention for us to expect something special. |

It was around the £600 mark, a few places it was less. _________________ Pour me a glass please. |

Sorry haven't tried the 20 year old 105. |

Thanks. Seems such a reasonable price now, for what it is. But then ten years is a long time, so it shouldn't be surprising. |
