|
|
Hi all. Looking to pickup another Bourbon to try. I have these options:
Woodford reserve double oak
Woodford reserve distillers select
Blantons original
Knob creek
Bulleit 10yr
Elijah craig 12
Four roses single barrel
What would you pick?
I've tried blantons already and really enjoyed. Have also had makers 46 and didn't care for it so thinking any wheated really sweet bourbons are off the table.
Thanks |

From that selection I'd go for the Elijah Craig, Four Roses and Blantons in that order. The Elijah Craig has an awesome spicy profile that doesn't overpower with sweetness. A good balance that shows great maturity. |

Four Roses SB.
One of my all time favourites and simply one of the best bourbons out there. They use a high Rye mashbill so it's the total opposite of a wheater.
After that I'd go for the EC12. Be careful and make sure you get a 12yo as they are phasing out the age statement.
Knob Creek is good but you have to like the Beam taste profile. It's quite nutty. Again they are phasing out the 9yo statement so be careful which one you get. _________________ "Too much of anything is bad, but too much good whisky is barely enough." |

Thanks for the responses. Ended up with Four Roses Sb. It's very good I wasn't expecting it to be as sweet. Great nose, mouthfeel and enjoying the long finish once the sweet fades a bit.
Think I prefer the Blantons to this so far but I'll give it some time and reassess after a few tastings.
So the EC is less sweet and a bit more spice? Of the bourbons I've tried and really liked were blantons and Bulleit. |

I personally find Four Roses SB a lot less sweet than EC12. It's one of the highest (if not the highest) Rye content mashbills for a bourbon. They do use a yeast that gives a fruity taste so maybe that's what your getting. EC12 is more pudding like with thicker flavours, toffee, vanilla cream etc.
Mashbills:
EC12 - 75% corn, 12% Rye and 13% malted barley.
Four Roses Single Barrel - 60% corn, 35% Rye and 5% malted barley.
The more Rye to corn the more spice. You get sweet mainly from the cask as they are virgin oak. _________________ "Too much of anything is bad, but too much good whisky is barely enough." |

I've given the Four Roses SB a chance and it's really growing on me. It's also very nice with a dash of water added. Thanks again for all the suggestions! |

I'm close to finishing the woodford reserve double oaked and am blown away by this Bourbon. Great flavor combined with an oily mouthfeel and lingering finish.
Debating to purchase again or try the Elijah craig 12, wild turkey 101 or Buffalo trace.
Any thoughts on the above 3?
Thanks all |

Standard Buffalo Trace is a good bourbon, but it can't live with the other 2.
In terms of the EC12 of WT101, depends on your preference. The EC12 it's a corn heavy, sweeter style whereas the WT101 is Rye heavy and spicy. Both very good to be honest and you can't go wrong with either. _________________ "Too much of anything is bad, but too much good whisky is barely enough." |

If you can get the EC12 at a reasonable price, I would get that one and save it until you get to grips with bourbon. The EC is now a NAS expression and finding the 12 is very difficult. WT 101 is always in my home, I like it neat of as a mixer. The alligator char does add a lot to the profile and some are put off by this. BT is a good one to experience during the learning curve. I am indifferent about BT, but I can't say anything negative about it.
FR SmB and SB are two of my favorites. Those two have permanent space on my top shelf. Blanton's is very good but can be rare in Phoenix. I keep a few in the bunker. |

Good to know thank you! The WT sounds much different than ones I've had so far. |

Thank you. Hmm tough decisions here! Just found out blantons gold is back in stock too. Had the original one and it was fantastic. If I had to rate ones I've had so far top to bottom it'd be:
Woodford reserve double oaked
Blantons original
Four roses single barrel
Woodford reserve distillers select
Bulleit
Maker's 46
Wild Turkey 81 |

Blantons Gold is one of my all time favourite bourbons, different price bracket all together over here though. _________________ "Too much of anything is bad, but too much good whisky is barely enough." |

I'll have to try it. $100 here . But Woodford reserve double oaked is around 70.
Entry levels are around 30-45 |
