I have a bottle of Scotch Whisky which I would be interested in putting into an auction. I don't know anything about whisky so I was wondering if anybody could tell me if this bottle is valuable.

Details:

Old Malt Cask 50o
Single Malt Scotch Whisky
Distilled at Port Ellen Distillery
Matured in Sherry Cask
Islay Scotch whisky for Fortnum & Mason Piccadilly London
Aged 21 years
Distilled September 1982
Bottled July 2004
This bottle is one of 305 bottlesfilled from the cask
Douglas Laing & Co Ltd

Finish: Long, Maritime yet earthy and medicinal
Nose: Sherry impact, warms to an Islay collison
Palate: Spiced, fruity, phenolic, darkly smoky.
700ml

Also it comes in a wooden presentation box embossed with a gold coloured FM and pattern (obviously for Fortnum & Mason).

Regards

Hi Mark

What you have is a bottle containing whisky which was distilled at the Port Ellen whisky distillery on Islay. The cask was then purchased and bottled 21 years later by the independent bottler Douglas Laing who has a reputation for bottling very good whisky.

The Port Ellen distillery closed in 1983 and the stillhouse was demolished in 2003 so it will not produce whisky again making its whisky quite sought after. There is some info on the distillery here:

The bottle you have is from the Douglas Laing Old Malt Cask Series and was especially bottled for Fortnum & Mason Piccadilly London.

As far as value is concerned i would estimate between £80 to £150 but anything can happen at an auction such as ebay. Have a look in The Whisky Exchange shop they have a Port Ellen Douglas Laing Old Malt Cask 1982 26 year old at the moment for £107.50
