I opened my first bottle of Blanton's Original Single Barrel Bourbon today and here are my taste notes.
Neat-
Nose: Intial strong spruce beer notes evaporate then aromatic wood polish and carmel oak; all of a sudden distant black cherry and slight vanilla bean tones arise with black tea essences and nuts. Over time, the sweetness of the expression "ripens" in a very pleasant way.
Palate: Spices hovering over cherry cream, syrupy with clean woody-oak tones, caramels and lovely chocolate notes.
Finish: Longish, corn notes, some citrus, cherry lozenges and an underlay of tasteful oak.
Comments: This is really an impressive bourbon. There is an initial intense nose hovering over more delicate layers of aroma and flavors which hook your interest. I can clearly see the appeal of this one. It impacts the senses without being harsh. It is well-balanced from start to finish. I think I've started a "relationship" with this one.

Ah glad you like it, phew.
It'll change in a few days too now you've taken a dram out of the top, my experince with high rye bourbon is that once they get some air to them they really open up.
Nice about the cherry lozenges, the Gold lacks some of the menthol notes you get in other bourbons, it may be an effect of the higher strength carrying the heavier flavours on the palate rather than the more subtle minty/menthol ones.
Single barrel though, so maybe my current and last few bottles have just taken different flavours from the oak. _________________ "Too much of anything is bad, but too much good whisky is barely enough." |
