I was looking at Glenfiddich bottles the 40 and 50yr old and there is major price difference $3900 vs $26,000? Is the difference really that big? Any thoughts on this? |

A friend of mine, a major league whisky pundit, tasted the Glenfiddich 50 at the Las Vegas whisky show a few years back. He was more than impressed. Part of the price differential between the 40 and 50 year is based on rarity. The Glenfiddich 50 year only releases 50 bottles of this expression a year. Most of it is reserved in advance by collectors or really rich folk who want to drink it. Part of it is based on the concept of buying the "best there is" produced and promoted by a certain distillery. _________________ "Always carry a large flagon of whisky in case of snakebite and furthermore always carry a small snake."

so as far of investment for the 40yr not really worth the try since there is 600 bottles each year released? Im in Canada as well and cant find any auctions here, so would need to buy from retail store the 40 for around $3900. |

Whisky investment in Canada is really a Non sequitur for the private citizen as there is no modality or way of selling it either here or abroad. It is illegal to mail alcohol from Canada anywhere and there are no auction sites in Ontario and I believe anywhere else in Canada for the private citizen to sell on. So in reality, whisky collections here in Canada are basically for self-enjoyment and drinking.
Having said that, for $3900., you could get quite a number and variety of single malts. For example, The Glenfiddich 30 Year which I have tried is a really stellar dram for around $500.

Just touching on the rarity aspect; the difference between 20yo and 30yo is 10 years and so is the difference between 40yo and 50yo, but they are a very different 10 years. With each year as more whisky evaporates there is more head space in the barrel, that means more surface area open to the air and more evaporation, meaning more head space and thus more evaporation. Once whisky goes over 30 years the decline in the spirit is exponential, the older it gets the more and more you loose. What you have left can be ruined by over oaking so the chance of getting something good at 50 years is rare, this is why a good bottling from a good cask is so expensive.
As Murray says it's a mantlepiece whisky, one for the super rich to have the top line of. There are better investments out there if drinking ain't your bag. _________________ "Too much of anything is bad, but too much good whisky is barely enough." |
