Have you got what it takes to become the next Bard?
In celebration of the 250th anniversary of Robert Burns, Scotland's National Bard, and to launch a fantastic year long programme of events, Homecoming Scotland has teamed up with The Famous Grouse, to create the world's biggest ever Burns Supper celebration.
To mark the 250th anniversary of Robert Burns in 2009 The Scotsman is offering every reader a chance to pen a toast to the famous tipple associated with the Bard; Scotch whisky.
Part of The World Famous Burns Supper - supported by The Famous Grouse and Homecoming Scotland - the toasts will be judged by an esteemed panel of judges.
The winning poem will be judged by an industry panel from the world of Whisky and Burns including John Ramsay, Master Blender of The Famous Grouse, Marie Christie, Director of Homecoming Scotland 2009, Paul Bush OBE, Chief Operating Officer of EventScotland, and representatives from the World Burns Federation.
The Famous Toast will then receive its first public reading as part of the official Burns Supper in Alloway on Saturday 24th January, attended by the First Minister of Scotland.
It will also be printed on 250 bottles of a limited edition whisky, being specially created by The Famous Grouse, to be auctioned off at Burns Suppers around the world.
The writer of the winning toast will receive a bottle of the limited edition whisky - worth over £300. Now that sounds like pure poetry.
If you are interested in entering the competition the poem must consist of no more than 40 words, and reference both the whisky and Robert Burns.
For more details and the entry form see the Scoytsmans site:

Hi I noticed on the burns supper 2009 website that they had selected a winner for this competition, not me unfortunately. Anyway here is the winning toast:
By Mary MacIntyre:
Tae Rabbie Burns Scotland's Son
Wha' words a million hearts hae won
We fill oor glass o' golden grain
The Famous Grouse we proudly drain
So here's a toast in celebration
Tae Rabbie, tae whisky, tae Scotland Our Nation
As John already said above the toast will also be printed on the 250 bottles of a limited edition of The Famous Grouse, 37 year old blended malt, signifying every year of Burns' extraordinary life, which will be auctioned off at some of the most prestigious Burns Suppers around the world.

If any of you like Robert Burns poetry and songs BBC1 has 2 specially made programs on this Sunday 25th Jan to mark Rabbies 250th anniversary, the shows look like they will be good and there is a host of stars appearing in them.
Anyway the first one "No Holds Bard" is on at 9.00pm followed at 10.00pm by "Auld Lany Syne: Robert Burns At Celtic Connections". These times are for the STV region. No doubt the shows should be available to watch on the BBCi player also.

Hi Lewis
I saw those shows advertised the other night, they do look good. I think some of the people out of Still Game are in it and loads of other well known faces, worth watching i think.
