I came across this article recently in the online version of Herald Scotland:
"Environmental groups want a complete ban on commercial extraction of peat by 2020 to protect Scotland's biodiversity"
"But now the tradition of using peat to flavour some of the world's most famous malts has come under attack by a number of powerful environmental groups, who have called for a ban on commercial extraction of peat by 2020".

An interesting read Murray.
It is a fair enough proposal to expect the that the companies which hold extraction rights should contribute to the maintenance of peatlands. No idea what the figures are but i would guess only a small percentage of peat is extracted today compared to many years ago when it was a main source of fuel. _________________ There's no bad whisky. I don't think there's any real fear of his happening or affecting whisky production. Although given peat produces more Co2 than coal and taking it out is pretty damaging I wouldn't be surprised to see some restrictions e.g less peat blocks in garages in the future.

They must have extracted more peat in the past than they do now. I can now imagine a peat tax going on whisky. |

Perhaps indirectly via a Oz-style carbon tax, but I doubt it. |

It seems like some whisky companies already impose there own peat charge, just look at the pricing of the big peaty whiskies such as Ardbeg, £40 for a 10 year old. |
