Nothing wrong with some speculation!

However McLeod distillers have access to many distilleries and casks, look at their Chieftains range, As we get it, Islay blends etc. Frankly unless you work for them or they let the cat out of the bag .....your guess is as good as any, as to the source. It would be nice to think that is was an exclusive Brora but I don't think so, do you?
One thing for sure is that, even if Jim Murray is laying it on a bit thick, it should be a cracking dram for the money. Look forward to hearing the comments on it and if it was up to the hype!!

I had no luck getting hold of a bottle of the Maxwell 33. I did have a bottle of the 28 year old last year, it didnt blow me away but it was a decent enough whisky for the price i paid, £35 if i recall correctly. As to its distillery of origin i couldnt have guessed but i doubt that it would have come from anywhere like Brora more likely a lesser known distillery i would have thought.

Alright, supping on a dram of Maxwell 33. My notes are in the tasting forum here:

Certainly not a duffer and an unbelievable bargain at £40.

Hi guys,

Having finished 3/4 of this bottle following my birthday, I am a bit torn.

First things first - cracking value, no doubt.

However, I was given lots of bottles of whisky and in a blind taste (admittedly we were all a bit wasted), most people (myself included) preferred the Mortlach 16 F&F and most preferred Balvennie Doublewood too, for that matter.

I'm no expert, but I think Jim Murray's extremely high score, for me anyway, does not seem warranted.

You can taste the age in this and not being a connoisseur of any description, it is extremely unusual for me to be drinking anything older than 20 years old; therefore, perhaps my taste buds are somewhat maturing.

Part of me wants to keep the rest for a few years and come back to it, see how I feel then as only 5 years ago you wouldn't really catch me enjoying whisky.

Sounds like you had an enjoyable birthday session. i am sure your thoughts on the Maxwell 33 are spot on, everyones opinion is an individual thing. It has been a while since i have had a bottle of the Mortlach Flora & Fauna, you have put me in the mood for a bottle now.

Be carefulll about leaving the remainder of the Maxwell 33 for too long as the more air in a bottle the quicker the whisky can start to lose its character. I usually dont have any bottle open for more than 2 years, i always make a point of finishing it before then. Some people decant there whisky into smaller bottle to drink at a later date.

Yes, it was enjoyable, until the moment I proposed to my missus on the spur of the moment, (you live and you learn!) Embarassed

I have wondered about keeping whisky. I have a beautiful decanter, although I once left a bottle in there for about 4 weeks and I am sure the air got to it.

Considered putting some PTFE tapr or something to create a better seal, but feels wrong.

So TheWM, did she say yes, are congratulations in order. Very Happy

Decanters look great but no good for storing whisky as the air will get at it.

I think we need an update as to what her answer was?

Perhaps you will need to keep the Maxwell 33 for a few years, weddings are expensive these days, in fact a quick google search shows the expected average for 2013 to be £16,164 or a little over 400 bottles of Maxwell.

Or you could pick yourself up a bottle of the Dalmore Constellation 1969 and still have £1164 to spend on other bottles Laughing

But best of luck with the wedding, I'm sure it will all be well worth it in the end Wink

Laughing

She didn't say yes straight away Embarassed

It was more like "this is a wind up, you're kidding, stop playing around" etc...

To be fair, I was quite drunk and the thought hadn't crossed my mind until about 5 mins before I actually popped the question!

But - she said yes, although now she's already moaning about dates, rings and all sorts Laughing

That all said, to put it in context, we have been together for coming up 12 years, we bought a place together 10 years ago and have an 18 month old daughter (and a cat); she had been giving up all hope.

Whisky has a lot to answer for and I'll leave it at that. Very Happy

Congratulations! Destiny fulfilled. Life is far from simple but often what is ultimately meant to be, does happen. Wink
