What is in the Maxwell 28 year old single malt whisky from Lidl, does anyone know
I got the Lidl flyer through the door today and it lists this Maxwell 28 highland single malt and it is only£29.99
The flyer describes it as "This fine single malt has lain untouched in oak casks for 28 years to produce an outstanding whisky with a soft, sweet taste with a subtle kick of spice and citrus in its long lingering finish."
It is available from Thursday 25th November. Just wondered if anyone knew anything about and if it was worth picking up some on Thursday.

Bookie I also received the flyer with the bottle of Maxwell 28 single highland malt. £30 for any 28 year old single malt has surely got to be worth a try.
The name Maxwell seemed familiar to me so i did a bit of probing and there is a Willian Maxwell blend which was named after William Maxwell & Co. Ltd. an old established Liverpool firm of whisky blenders and a subsisidiary of Peter J Russell & Co. The Peter J Russell Co also own Ian Macleod Distillers, Glengoyne Distillery, Langs Brothers Distillery. So my guess is it was bottled by Ian Macleod distillers who in my experience turns out quality whisky.
There was also a bottle of 18 year old Speyside single malt for £20 in the flyer as well as bottle of Langs Supreme 5 year old blended whisky which is produced by Lang Brothers which is part of the Peter J Russell/Ian Macleod stable. Having said all that i may be totally wrong again

Alastair you could be a whisky detective.
I am tempted to give both the 28 and 18 year old a try and if they do come from Ian Macleod in a round about way they surely cant be bad. |

Alastair i think this should be your avatar
It may be a genuine quality whisky at a fantastic price, but i think i may wait until there is some feed back on it. |

If they did originate in a roundabout way from Ian Mcleod i would think they will be ok, i may give the 18 and 28 a try myself. |

Had to buy it today, but will not be opened until Christmas, so no tasting notes.
NB: Blurb on box says "Highland Single Malt" and "Limited Edition of only 3,600 bottles". |

just thought i better make a comment,
only just got back into interest of single malts,as i have 2 hogsheads up in doune, scotland (which i bought in 1994 and 1995 respectively) one is a 1994 deanstoun the other 1995 tobermory.
any way as they are of decent age was back in interest and paid £30 for a sample of the deanstoun, i was very pleased with the result (a 20cl sample of a 16yr old cask strength, probably 57 to 59 volume)
any way when i saw a 10yr tobermory at less than £20 at lidl, this morning i thought i better buy it (to get a guide of my own) was quite pleased with it.also bought the 28yr old maxwell.
i was quite pleasantly suprised, tastes of fruit & sweet spices(no peatiness whatsoever) as a non professional taster i can say that it is well worth the £30. |

captainbonius thanks for your tasting note on the Maxwell 28, you are like me i will have it opened immediately. That is the old Tobermory 10 year old expression Lidl is selling, they have recently released a new Tobermory 10 year old expression which is un-chillfiltered and bottled at 46.3% ABV which i tried recently and i have to say a huge improvement on the old bottling. |

captainbonius your 2 hogshead casks sound interesting, are you planning on bottling them soon or are you going to let them mature for a few more years. |

Brought my first bottle yesterday and had to open it.... what do you get for £30 in Lidl?! was my thought. Well fear not, once you get passed the slightly nasty shiny stopper an intense aroma is released when you first open the bottle. I popped some into my glass and added a little water, as is my preference. The aroma is a pleasant warm citrus with a hint of cinnamon... think mulled wine.
Then it was on to the taste... first a rich almost bitter Cointreau orange feel which follows through to a sweet candied lemon peel and ending with a smooth deep, but not peaty, autumn fruits & caramel finish!
My advise, it's not the most memorable whisky you'll ever try & it doesn't have the signature flare of an Islay or Speyside malt, but make no mistake that as a seasonal offering, your guests will be very happy and impressed. On a personal note, I think it's too good for guests and may well kept it just for my own pleasure on cold winter nights. So forget any reservations you may have about the supplier... GRAB YOUR BOTTLE/S WHILE YOU CAN!!!
Rating 77/100 but at a price point of under £30 it's the best value bottle around. |

Got a bottle of this yesterday - very nice. Agree with the taste notes above but I also detected some chocolate in there.
The Daily Mirror newspaper this week had a £5 off voucher if you spend £30 or more at Lidl, so my bottle + packet of hob nobs cost just over £25! For a 28 y/o!!!!
It might be cheap, but it's not one for the visitors. It's going to the back of the cupboard with the big boys! |
