Artis Secretum 2011 Whisky Illuminati Solaria Series Review

13th September 2019
Review of the Artis Secretum 2011 Cask No.900284 from the Whisky Illuminati Solaria Series.

Artis Secretum 2011 Whisky Illuminati Solaria Series 1 of 3Artis Secretum 2011 Cask No.900284 is one of five new single cask whiskies in the new Solaria Series from independent whisky bottler
Whisky Illuminati. It is the first of three releases from cask No.900284 with a further 2 releases from the same cask scheduled to be drawn and bottled over the next four years.

The new Solaria Series aims to give whisky enthusiasts the opportunity to explore how Scotch whisky evolves in the cask over time, thanks to its three-part bottling. Following this first edition (1:3) release in 2019, there will be a second release in 2021, with the final batch set for release in 2023.

Out of the line up of five single cask whiskies in the Solaria Series Artis Secretum which is Latin for trade secret is slightly different in that Whisky Illuminati have not revealed the distillery the whisky originated from, they do however tell us that similar to all the whiskies whiskies in the series it was produced in the Speyside region.

Artis Secretum 2011 Cask No.900284 bottling 1 of 3 has been fully matured in a First Fill Spanish Oak Sherry Butt, the trade secret whisky is non chill-filtered, naturally coloured and has been bottled at a higher than normal cask strength than we would normally see from any bottler, 67.1% ABV.

This first batch of the Artis Secretum 2011 Solaria Series is a release of 150 bottles and is available from from specialist whisky shops such as Master of Malt

William Morrison's Tasting Notes:

Nose: A bitter sweet mix of plum jam and rum soaked sultanas, some mildly treacled toffee.

Taste: A delicious mix of honey coated raisins and sultanas, oak spice infused chocolate orange and barley sugar sweet treacle toffee.

Finish: A long lush sherried finish which which see the sherried fruit eventually giving way to the oak spice with a lovely touch of ginger hanging in there for an age.

Comment: A young deliciously sherried Glenfarclas perhaps? And a good one! What does it matter really where it originated from as long as it is an enjoyable dram and this is a very enjoyable dram. Still a wee hint of spirity youthfulness on the nose but the pleasure on the palate and the finish more than makes up for it, perhaps it is the flavoursome 67.1% bottling strength of Artis Secretum which makes it so good, it certainly demonstrates how good a whisky can be when bottled at higher strength. I tried adding a drop of water, probably taking it down to around 50% but the pleasure was vastly reduced. I can only see this one getting better.

SMW Score 88/100
